Picky Eating or a Feeding Difficulty? Signs Parents Should Know

Many children go through phases of refusing certain foods. But when eating is consistently stressful or a child has trouble managing food safely, it may be time to look more closely at what is happening.

Signs to pay attention to include:

  • Frequent coughing or choking during meals

  • Difficulty chewing or moving food around the mouth

  • Holding food in the mouth instead of swallowing

  • Meals that take an unusually long time

  • A very limited range of foods that continues to shrink

  • Distress that regularly makes family meals difficult

These signs do not automatically mean a child needs therapy. A feeding evaluation can help identify whether oral skills, swallowing, sensory responses, or other factors are contributing. The right support depends on the individual child.

At Coastal Orofacial Wellness, I help families better understand their child’s feeding concerns and determine appropriate next steps. If mealtimes have become stressful, schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation to discuss whether an evaluation may be helpful.
